House Dress | Artful Clothes for the Every Day
Among my art school friends, the highest praise one can bestow on an outfit is that it looks comfortable. That it looks good is a given- nobody compliments “comfy” outfits that look undone.
Some of the greatest outfits are the ones that make us feel “like painting in a desert,” “like I’m a sculptor in her 80s on my way to a gallery opening” or “like an anthropologist lounging at home.” These are actual descriptions of outfits I’ve heard over the years, and what I gather from them is that the ultimate goal is to be creative, worldly, chic, confident in yourself and work, put together and at ease all at once. And that’s exactly the vibe I get from House Dress.
House Dress NY is a line designed and operated by California native Katie Goldman who says that these pieces are designed for women who dress for women but I’ll take it a step further and say that they are designed for creative women who dress for other artists.
The weight and texture of the linens draws you in for further investigation. Her silhouettes are unique but not unusual- just interesting enough for you to take a second (maybe third) look. And every piece has a remarkable detail- a raglan bell sleeve, an oblong front closure, a surprise contrast lining or beautiful tonal color blocking.
