We could all use a mental break these days, n’est-ce pas? In this time of closed borders, confinement indoors and an unrelenting stream of to-the-minute alarming news, it’s nice to let the mind wander. So I’ve asked Paule and Marine, the design team behind the slow luxury brand Nomasei to share a selection of their favorite films. Based in Paris and Montopoli, Nomasei creates shoes that have a timeless quality, elevated simplicity and stylish ease about them, so who better to turn to for films that will transport us to another time, in another world?
Read on for five films to add to your watch list.
Il Sorpasso | Dino Risi 1962
This Italian movie from the 60s is the summer quintessence.
Paule : The French actor Jean-Louis Trintignant is one of my favorite ever. This scene of swing dancing on the beach bar has an amazing mix of sensuality and humor that feels summer carelessness and happiness. I’ve watched it several times and every time I am moved by a different moment of the movie, the detail, a look, a gesture or words I wouldn’t remember form the last time I watched it. It is perfect.
Marine : I also love this movie for the same summer and freedom feelings and also because Bruno, the eccentric and flamboyant character reminds me my father who live life to the fullest. The young Trintignant is amazed in front of him. My father can do this effect.
Pauline à la Plage | Eric Rohmer 1983
I love most of Eric Rohmer movies, the language is a pure beauty. Dialogues feel like music, like literature or poetry. The whole feeling of this summer movie is freshness and lightness. I’ve watched it for the 1st time when I was the age of Pauline, the main character so I kind of identified myself.

Respiro | Emanuele Crialese 2002
Paule : Watching this movie you can smell summer and freedom. The Italian music, the landscapes, the heat with the sea, this amazing indomitable woman character surrounded by roughness of fishermen life gives a sense of sensuality and freedom that makes you want to run and jump in the Mediterranean sea.
Marine : also this fantasized Italian maternity mixed with the sensuality of this woman with eyes of the color of Mediterranean sea
The Great Gatsby | Jack Clayton 1974
Paule : Francis Scott Fitzgerald is one of my favorite author and I loved The Great Gatsby when I read it as a teenager, it is a beautiful tragedy. The actors in this interpretation are splendid and the parties scenes with crazy dance are just spectacular. I feel like partying like this after so many weeks in quarantine ! I want to be in the movie just to feel the joy of dancing like this.
Marine : I love this movie because I am fond of young Robert Redford, he was so beautiful… And also because I use to watch it with my grandmother.
Zorba The Greek | Michael Cacoyannis 1964
Paule : This one is a masterpiece I’ve discovered after my first vacations in Greece many years ago. It is something I do before or after abroad vacations, I am looking for movies from the place I am going to or from I am coming back to understand better the culture or see it through different eyes from mine. The whole movie is beautiful, tough and harsh as was life there at that time but this final Sirtaki dance scene is wonderful, these two men, dancing in front of this beautiful sea horizon. They are so chic and so full of life. The whole movie is sad but so happy too.
